Mechanical Data Center Design Engineer
The Mechanical Data Center Engineer functions as a technical specialist or supervisory role. Independently develops and applies advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to unique engineering problems. May supervise engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity, or serve as a technical specialist providing knowledge and expertise. Oversee design and support sales efforts providing state of the art data center design expertise.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
•Creates complete data center mechanical designs from concept to construction drawings and specifications.
•Generates and reviews mechanical equipment specifications, technical bid tabs, and approve vendor submittal's
•Develops detailed book and on plan specifications and performance requirements.
•Travels to client data center sites to perform facility evaluations, mechanical audits, and other tasks as required.
•Researches new materials, designs, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
•Creates design concepts that can be rapidly produced and easily integrated into critical facilities.
•Performs Design using Revit and/or AutoCAD.
•CFD Software Modeling experience is a plus.
•Engineering Standards: Proactively provides guidance & direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes & B&V policies. Assists in developing, maintaining & updating engineering standards. Provides technical guidance to others regarding projects & disciplines.
•Quality / Continuous Improvement: Independently applies knowledge & ensures compliance with B&V quality program. Establishes related processes, & promotes a culture that is conducive to quality. Provides guidance & direction to others. Supports continuous improvement & change management efforts.
•Engineering Production: Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for multiple or mega projects. Performs complex research & develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Oversees collection, assimilation, & management of data for engineering work. Prepares complex data center engineering calculations following standard methods & principles. Manages assigned budget, schedule, & quality requirements. Develops & applies advanced engineering solutions to complex problems. Reviews lower level engineering work or assignments. Is responsible for one or more of the following: leading production teams; coordinating multiple discipline activity; & serving as the responsible charge for projects. Establishes work plan to be applied to a given project.
•Project Coordination: Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on complex projects. Responsible for defining project schedules for single or multiple disciplines.
•Client Focus: Responsible for determining identification of key client interests & drivers on projects. Communicates client interests & drivers to project team members & develops approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on projects. Focuses on client's current needs & situations. May offer other services to the client. Typically provides support to business development or pursuit activities.
•Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: Serves as a data center technical specialist & has knowledge & skill set to provide consultation & guidance to project teams. Typically supports multiple projects on very complex technical challenges. Actively advances knowledge management of the enterprise and provides mentoring. As a subject matter expert, has additional expertise in a technical area, participates in professional societies by presenting papers, participates on technical committees, & assists with code/standard authoring. Is externally recognized in industry as a data center expert which enhances the company brand.
•People Management: Typically oversees performance management, career planning, recognition, learning & development, & corrective actions.
•Resource Management: Implements resource management strategy. Manages engineering resources. Resolves resource conflicts & identifies training needs. •Administrative: Administrative responsibilities may include office administration. Ensures policies, procedures, & processes are effectively implemented & communicated for work group. Ensures adherence to corporate & division programs. May approve timesheets and expense reports.
Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 11 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
• 11+ years of design experience in the area of mechanical engineering with specific emphasis in data center and mission critical facility and construction projects.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Experienced in fast track design/build projects and/or multiple significant upgrade projects.
• Design experience on data center IT projects desired.
• Solid understanding of applicable industry codes and standard practices.
• Solid mid-level design foundation in HVAC design, pumps, hydronic design, central plant, building load calculations.
• Knowledge of Trane Trace and building load calculation software
• Knowledge of LEED Commercial building design
• The ability to perform complex business case analyses is required.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to prioritize work efficiently, and good team orientation are a must.
• Experience using Revit is nice to have
• PE highly preferred
• International experience is a plus
• Travel up to 25%
• Commissioning experience is nice to have
