Electrical Data Center Design Engineer
The Electrical Data Center Design Engineer functions in a technical specialist or supervisory role. Independently develops and applies advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to unique engineering problems. May supervise engineering staff on projects of medium to high complexity, or serve as a technical specialist providing knowledge and expertise. Responsible for execution of assigned projects. Oversee design and support sales efforts providing state of the art data center design expertise.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
•Creates complete data center electrical infrastructural system designs from concept to construction drawings & specifications.
•Differentiates designs based on items such as predicted power density, flexibility of power deployment, & efficiency of power utilization minimizing stranded capacities.
•Develops detailed book & on plan specifications & performance requirements.
•Ensures that the conceptual design drawings & programming requirements assuring that the designs are modular, flexible & able to construct.
•Travels to client data center sites to perform facility evaluations, electrical systems audits, start-up testing, commissioning, & other tasks as required.
•Research's new materials, designs, & construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
•Creates design concepts that can be rapidly produced & easily integrated into critical facilities.
•Perform arc flash, fault current, breaker coordination, duration, & other required calculations using SKM, Revit MEP, AutoCAD and other computer aided design packages.
•Engineering Standards: Proactively provides guidance & direction on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes & B&V policies. Assists in developing, maintaining & updating engineering standards. Provides technical guidance to others.
•Quality / Continuous Improvement: Applies knowledge & ensures compliance with B&V quality program. Establishes related processes, & promotes a culture that is conducive to quality. Supports continuous improvement & change management efforts.
•Engineering Production: Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for multiple or mega projects. Performs complex research & develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection. Oversees collection, assimilation, & management of data. Prepares complex engineering calculations following standard methods & principles. Manages assigned budget, schedule, & quality requirements. Develops & applies advanced solutions to complex problems. Reviews lower level engineering work. Is responsible for one or more of the following: leading production teams; coordinating multiple discipline activity; & serving as the responsible charge for projects. Establishes work plan to be applied to a given project.
•Project Coordination: Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on complex projects. Responsible for defining project schedules for single or multiple disciplines.
•Client Focus: Responsible for determining identification of key client interests & drivers on projects. Communicates client interests & drivers to project team members & develops approaches to accommodate these concerns. Focuses on client's current needs & situations. Typically provides support to business development or pursuit activities.
•Knowledge Sharing, Innovation & Technology: Serves as a Data Center technical specialist & has knowledge & skill set to provide data center consultation & guidance to project teams. Supports multiple projects on very complex technical challenges. Advances knowledge management of the enterprise & provides mentoring. As a subject matter expert, has expertise in Data Center's, participates in professional societies by presenting papers, participates on technical committees, & assists with code/standard authoring. Is externally recognized in industry as an expert which enhances the Company brand.
•People Management: May oversee performance management, career planning, recognition, learning & development, & corrective actions. •Resource Management: Implements resource management strategy. Manages engineering resources for small group. Resolves resource conflicts & identifies training needs.
•Administrative: Responsibilities may include office administration. Ensures policies, procedures, & processes are effectively implemented & communicated for workgroup. Ensures adherence to corporate & division programs. Approve timesheets and expense reports.
Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing. Minimum of 11 years related work experience. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
•11+ years related experience in Data Center mission critical systems design.
•Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
•Experienced in fast track design/build projects and/or multiple significant upgrade projects.
•Experienced in the design, and commissioning of UPS, switch gear, generators, automatic and static transfer switches, transformers, controls, security monitoring & life safety systems is desirable.
•Cornerstone or Practice Leader level resource for electrical in the area of Data Center engineering.
•Troubleshooting ability for field work / systems analysis a plus.
•The ability to perform complex business case analyses is required.
•Strong written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to prioritize work efficiently, and good team orientation are a must.
•Experience using Revit and AutoCAD is preferred.
•PE highly preferred.
•International experience is a plus.
•Commissioning experience is nice to have.
•Travel up to 25%
